On the Carousel

Childhood
Fragments, images, memories,
shadowy, in the mist,
a taste, a smell, a feeling, a dream, a fantasy.
Stories, photographs, overlays
Appropriation of images.
Manipulating the truth, overwriting the experience, blurring the contours.
The image spins, it staggers.

Retrospect, Dizziness, Vertigo

The exhibition explores what memories evoke within us. Whether as a distant image, a narrative, or an emotional state, how does looking back shape our present and our future?
Without ignoring the turbulence of the present, the exhibition addresses the power of the past: how it shapes, blurs, and sometimes even erases our sense of being. It also explores the narrative—the story we tell about ourselves—that shapes, overwrites, relativizes, and transforms our memories.

The artistic works created for this exhibition attempt to confront this dizzying subject.
The exhibition takes place both indoors and outdoors. The indoor space features artists who grew up in countries other than Germany. The outdoor presentation showcases artists who grew up in Kreuzberg or moved there at a young age. Their works are presented on screens in the shop windows surrounding BLOCK 57, the residential block that SCOTTY is part of. Today, all the participating artists are based in Berlin.
The exhibition venues alongside SCOTTY are: Die Stiege, Bioladen Brandenburger Landwaren Oranienstr. 47A | Copy Tiger Oranienstr. 44 | Boxen Gross Oranienplatz 5

“…A weed pushing through concrete, a root seeping from a crack in a drainpipe, a flower holding on at the edge of the road, a tree raising its crown toward the light, they don’t remind me of my childhood, but of the fact that it still breathes somewhere. What was once ordinary now feels like a quiet hope…” | Şifa Girinci | www.sifagirinci.com

“…The streets of my childhood seemed wider and emptier. Perhaps they were. Perhaps I was simply smaller.” Sophia Muriel | www.instagram.com/sophiamuriel_/?hl=de

“…people who didn’t have much money lived here…” | Natascha Ungeheuer | https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/malerin-natascha-ungeheuer-meine-bilder-sind-mein-100.html

“…What remains are fragments: the smell of rain and damp earth, unstable emotions, a rising inner unease, the memory of the desire to escape from a swimming pool full of monkeys.” | Eunsun Ko | https://eunsunko.com/

“…In winter, the city measured time in rourines. In summer, the sea dissolved them. On the island, time could expand. Even today, freedom smells of the sea…” | Sümer Sayın | www.sumersayin.com

“…Don’t feel belonging, don’t follow, don’t listen to your mother who wants you to obey the roles, to be as everyone else. Don’t listen to your father who wants you to work with him in the factory. Try to be unique. Dress differently. They don’t notice you now but later they will. When no one is around, put the music on high volume and sing, scream out, be loud.” | Sharon Paz | sharonpaz.com/wp/

„…My belongings remain packed in suitcases, moving from one temporary room to another, extending a childhood experience into the present.“ | Rezzan Gümgüm | rezzangumgum.com

„Childhood is one long tunnel in the dark, spinning, turning, churning, until the sunrays shine through and the hills appear again. Childhood is a long, cold Sunday afternoon, where nothing important happens.” | Inga Harutyunyan | – @pixie.eats.people

“… there were just a bunch of teenagers hanging around. And suddenly, a whole new world opened up to me. I knew right away: These are my people. That night, my life fucking started. Everything before that? You can shove it in a box and forget about it — I didn’t give a shit.” | Lilli Kuschel | www.instagram.com/lillikuschel/?hl=de

“…I don’t want the past back; outdoor toilets, frozen water pipes in winter, and the Berlin Wall. But I don’t want this time either; gentrification, constant rent increases, and a suffocating, commercialized multicultural monotony.” | Friedrich Kuhn

As part of the exhibition, we invite you to a series of events, including an artist talk, an artist walk, and a talk on “Working with Communities.” We will also be hosting an exchange with EG 22, a young project space in Schöneberg. As part of this collaboration, the films featured in the exhibition “Auf dem Karussell” will be presented in a film screening.
The exhibition will close with a finissage on November 14, 2026.
Further dates and details will be announced soon.
