Urgent appeal: Protection for Oyoun director Louna Sbou and 18 other German participants after their illegal arrest and kidnapping on the Global Sumud Flotilla!

PRESS RELEASE Oyoun calls for the intervention of cultural and political institutions in Berlin and throughout Germany to provide immediate protection for Louna Sbou, Managing Director and Artistic Director of Oyoun. Oyoun is an intersectional platform for diasporic and international art and culture based in Berlin. Louna Sbou is one of 19 German participants in the International Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza. She sailed on the boat Paola 1.

Yesterday, October 1, 2025, the Global Sumud Flotilla was blocked in international waters by the Israeli army (IDF), and its participants were arrested and abducted. This constitutes a violation of international law by the Israeli government and a direct threat to the life and limb of German citizens. The German government must ensure that German citizens and international civilians participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla are protected from attacks, intimidation, and unlawful arrests.

Our demands German government and administration
We demand immediate diplomatic intervention by the federal government to protect Louna Sbou and all German detainees, and the establishment of a crisis team to protect those detained.

About the Global Sumud Flotilla:
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a civilian, peaceful initiative whose goal is to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, which violates international law, in order to open a humanitarian corridor and deliver vital aid. On board the more than 40 boats were approximately 500 doctors, lawyers, journalists, cultural workers, and human rights defenders from over 40 countries.

International Legal Dimension & the Federal Government's Duty to Protect
​​​​​​​The arrest in international waters constitutes a clear violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which prohibits any unlawful use of force on the high seas.

Germany is obligated to protect its citizens:
Basic Law, Article 1, Paragraph 1: Human dignity is inviolable.
Basic Law, Article 2, Paragraph 2: Right to life and physical integrity.
Consular Law: Duty of the Foreign Office to provide assistance in emergencies.

Oyoun fordert den Einsatz der kulturellen und politischen Institutionen Berlins und deutschlandweit, zum sofortigen Schutz von Louna Sbou, Geschäftsführerin und Künstlerische Leitung von Oyoun. Das Oyoun ist eine intersektionale Plattform für diasporische und internationale Kunst und Kultur mit Sitz in Berlin. Louna Sbou ist eine von 19 deutschen Teilnehmer*innen der Internationalen Global Sumud Flotilla nach Gaza. Sie ist auf dem Boot Paola 1 gesegelt. 

Die Global Sumud Flotilla wurde gestern, am 01.10.2025, von der israelischen Armee (IDF) in internationalen Gewässern blockiert und ihre Teilnehmenden wurden festgenommen und entführt. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Verletzung des internationalen Völkerrechts seitens der israelischen Regierung und eine direkte Bedrohung von Leib und Leben deutscher Staatsbürger*innen. Die Bundesregierung muss sich dafür einsetzen, dass deutsche Staatsangehörige und internationale Zivilist*innen, die an der Global Sumud Flotilla teilnehmen, vor Angriffen, Einschüchterungen und rechtswidrigen Festnahmen geschützt werden.

Unsere Forderungen an die Deutsche Regierung und Verwaltung
Wir fordern eine unverzügliche diplomatische Intervention der Bundesregierung zum Schutz von Louna Sbou und allen deutschen Festgesetzten und die Einrichtung eines Krisenstabs zum Schutz der Festgesetzten.
