Never Odd or Even REVIEW

Before there was text there was the image, a subjective representation of the surrounding reality. The text itself seems to be more complex. It consists of many layers including the semantic, the information, and the visual layer.  In everyday life we focus on the meanings of words, which are formed by individual letters, not perceiving their other values and assets.  Words have to be moved to another context to stop us for a moment and make us see them from another perspective.

The PIGS Vote -What people said when asked

"Stronger Magic" vs "Choreographed Coincidence" with others that didn’t specify mixed in… -From the artist’s point of view it must be really interesting to see one’s work in such a new context/meaning. The aim to blur the autonomy of each artist was really successful. -I guess the idea of motivating people to look at an exhibition in an opening situation wins over everything, but the light decision behind Stronger Magic is such a dominant one that it makes the curation very problematic for me. The Choreographed Coincidence is just presenting the works and it does not connect them. No one wins except whoever came up with the idea for this event. -The space felt better utilized, more mysterious -What was the problem with the light? Do you want to save energy? -Poetic and dense approach .Very courageous.

Curating for Dummies-Q&A with Aaron Moulton and Carson Chan

Describe in a step-by-step way what the curating process is like for you- like If you had to write Curating for Dummies: step one, step two..
I would say that for me it starts with a problem and you work to complicate that problem to demonstrate potential or unforeseen complexities rather than simply solve it or literalize it. I like simple or archetypal ideas that often connect with personal or cultural conflicts that I think people can generally relate to. I try to think of ways in which that conflict or problem can be seen from every angle: from the most clichéd and standard to the most esoteric and abstract; all the while imagining a composite sketch of this idea. In this sense the curating process is structuring the elements of a statement. Each position within the framework should be seen as an essential part of that statement.

The Curators Battle I: Aaron Moulton Vs Carson Chan

Each curator suggests 4 artists.
Both curators have to create a show with all the resulting 8 artists.
They choose a title, form a concept, write a curatorial text and give instructions for the set up.
One curator is using the left wing of Grimmuseum, the other is using the right (back room) wing.
Both shows are inaugurated at the same time anonymously.
Visitors vote on which show they prefer during the opening.
The winner is announced at 23.30h on the opening night, Saturday 19.03.
