Berlin Art Prize: 8 Nominees 8 Exhibitions 8 Project Spaces

The Berlin Art Prize has returned after two years of pandemic pause. The exhibitions highlight eight nominees at eight independent project spaces across Berlin. The Berlin based nominees reflect the broad range of contemporary practices in the city, from performance and film to installation, drawing, and sculpture. The six-week exhibitions will also host a wide-ranging event program– workshops, readings, discussions, and performances. The 2022 jury will select three winners to be at ACUD Club.
The trophies, which celebrate the concept of magic, have been made for the occasion by Petrit Halilaj & Alvaro Urbano.

The 2022 nominees and participating project spaces are:
Alicja Rogalska at Scherben
Bassem Saad at Peles Empire
Hana Yoo at ACUD Galerie
Lucas Odahara at Die Möglichkeit einer Insel
Mazen Khaddaj at Blake & Vargas
Mazenett Quiroga at LAGE EGAL [Kimgo]
Melanie-Jame Wolf at Centrum

The winner will be announced live on September 15th during the public award ceremony at Spoiler Aktionsraum

In 2022, 700 artists applied. Following a round of studio visits to a long list of 15 artists, the jury – artists Candice Breitz, Anna Ehrenstein, Amelie von Wulffen, curator Alya Sebti and researcher Sinthujan Varatharajah – chose the eight nominees. For its seventh edition, the prize collaborates with eight project spaces to offer the artists an opportunity to present their artistic positions in solo exhibitions. With this concept, the non-profit initiative continues to expand its role as a networked platform into a significant collaborative project, calling attention to the places in Berlin where new art emerges. The eight artists, from seven countries, will show a range of new and existing works. The themes explored by the artists include the dystopia of fossil capitalism (Alicja Rogalska); the administration and resistance of peripheral bodies in Beirut and Berlin (Bassem Saad); collective anxiety and transcendental experiences (Hana Yoo); the formal question of notations (Isabell Schulte); alternative remembrance in South America and Europe (Lucas Odahara); strategies of political resistance and queer self-assertion (Mazen Khaddaj); excavation on the Amazonas (Mazenett Quiroga); and the figure of the comedian (Melanie-Jame Wolf). The performances, readings, workshops, and concerts reflect the locality of the project spaces and their position in the city.
