Wed, 17 May 18-20:30 at anorak LOVE TEST: The Workshop with Rosa Aiello & Dylan Aiello

This is a movement based workshop with Dylan Aiello at anorak’s new space in Berlin Tempelhof.

In this workshop we will explore the concept of circuit, as a path, a repetition, a refuge, a habit, a ritual of transcendence. We will perform a series of games and exercises to sensitise ourselves to interpersonal and spatial relationships and explore the many ways that circuit can take root in and reflect on the space that contains it.  Participation is free. Please RSVP at: hello@anorakanorak.com.__

The workshop is part of LOVE TEST: Cruising for a Bruising, a newly developed piece featuring film, live performance, and song by Rosa Aiello, Dylan Aiello & Friends, which premieres on Friday, 19 May 2023 at anorak. More info here.

Fri, 19 May 18-21:00 at BBA Gallery Opening ‘Beyond Solitude’ by Giulietta Coates

‘Beyond Solitude’ is the first solo show of Giulietta Coates at BBA Gallery. The exhibition represents a body of work spanning the last 4 years. Black and white photographic fragments of landscapes, embedded in wood, stand for the longing of what is unreachable and for things to be different. The expansive mountainous landscapes of Haute Provence where absolute solitude resounds, informs the works within ‘Beyond Solitude’. Reconstructions of landscapes exude a melancholic beauty of world within worlds, and longings that have philosophical, material, personal and collective origins. Giulietta Coates has lived in Haute Provence for the past 15 years.

Desert Diaries jumps from location to location and back and forth through time. As a shapeshifting text, it takes the form of travel log, surveillance device, memory bank and teleporter. The diary entries are entered by an outsider who takes a journey through different parts of the Southwest deserts of the United States, meeting land, humans and more-than-humans. The traveller has many roles, including witness, listener, ghost-whisperer, guest and target. Desert Diaries started in 2012 when Yoland first parachuted into the desert. The work shares the often invisible and suppressed stories of migration, poverty, loss, borders and power. In the format of a journey, it weaves through borderlands, public lands and military zones, going off the grid and then into the heady cities that bookend these desert dwellings.

The performative reading of Desert Diaries by K. Yoland is supported by Berlin based artists Chang Gao and Anna Karoline Müller.

Fri, 19 May, 20:00 at anorak LOVE TEST: Cruising for a Bruising- re-opening in new location with an exhibition by Rosa Aiello, Dylan Aiello & friends, doors 8pm, performance 8:30pm. Afterparty with DJ sets by Eleni Poulou and Pitt Wenninger.

On the opening night of anorak’s new space in Berlin-Tempelhof, we are proud to present LOVE TEST: Cruising for a Bruising, a collaboration by artist and filmmaker Rosa Aiello and actor and theatremaker Dylan Aiello. Building on a lifetime relationship between them, LOVE TEST: Cruising for a Bruising stages the slippery dynamics of testing love, attention-seeking, and pushing past thresholds of social tolerance as potentially meaningful forms of connection, actions to be treated without contempt: a comedy of errors rather than a tragedy of failures. Short comic routines called ‘Lazzi,’ which acted as performance units in Renaissance Commedia dell’Arte theatre to construct, break into, and unravel plots, serve as a means to destabilise the roles we take on as friends, lovers, performers, bosses, and siblings, as well as the power dynamics at play in these roles. As a love test, this collaboratively developed piece puts a spotlight on the urge to act, to control, to make something happen. Stitching together film, live performance, and song, LOVE TEST: Cruising for a Bruising is a variety show, an ecstatic conversation, a road trip, a succession of interruptions, charged with expectation.

The event will also feature film footage by Laura Langer and filmed appearances by Arianna Calgaro, Leslie Ewen, Victor Jacono, Maya Misfud, Tori Sasso-Briggs, Scarlett Stitt, Katherine Ward, and others.

On view until May 27th Yalda Afsah: Curro at Between Bridges Residency Space:
A series of cuts mark the uneasy climax of Yalda Afsah’s Curro, an exhibition culminating the inaugural Between Bridges residency. The show debuts the fifth installment in the Berlin-based artist’s series of films concerned with ritualised interaction between men and animals. She has dedicated her practice to these human-animal relationships since 2018. Conceived as an installation across two rooms, the film is split into parts which are displayed in a fence-like framing structure and viewable from a rounded bench both constructed for the space and reminiscent of the physical entrapment depicted in the film. The structure also resonates with the film’s title, a Galician term for fencing something in. While Curro’s snipping scenes could conjure a score of symbolic associations, it lands less as metaphor here than as the pinnacle of a brutal and domineering frenzy. A kind of literal power grab.

until Jun 10th at einBuch.haus: Jeong Hwa Min: ma-eum: Wandering Minds

For the first edition of the picture book ma-eum: Wandernde Gemüter in German, einBuch.haus invites the illustrator Jeong Hwa Min to a solo exhibition.

ma-eum is a series of paintings in which the artist collects and documents ma-eum* that exist within her but have been forgotten, hidden, or neglected. The process of numbering the ma-eum, taking note of their condition, and documenting their proper storage is similar to the process of collecting to create a personal herbarium. The Korean word 마음ma-eum means heart, mind, and spirits in English.

*ma-eum:
1. The character or personality of a person.
2. Feelings and thoughts that arise in or are triggered by another person or thing in a person.
3. A space or place where a person’s thoughts, feelings, memories, etc., originate or settle.

The exhibition title (French: circus tent) already characterizes the artistic idea Christian Hellmich and Matthias Moravek are playing around with: Their paintings and sculptures are all dealing with aspects of the imaginary and illusionary, be it mysterious or clown-esque. Let the magic happen!
