Wed, 10 May 16-19h at alpha nova & galerie futura, Betül Merve Tekoğlu: Sirens
concept and composition: Betül Merve Tekoğlu
sound: Baptiste Moulin
The 4-channel sound installation Sirens by artist Betül Merve Tekoğlu deals with acoustic strategies of care, solidarity and resistance in hostile environments. The composition draws its tension from a contradiction: It consists of sound frequencies that can be used as weapons or deterrents, but here are turned into their opposite, having a calming and relaxing effect. Sirens can be experienced during the exhibition’s opening hours and invites visitors to stop, rest and listen.

13.05.2023 // 15:00 Nicht eine* weniger Intergenerational Roundtable on Autonomous Feminist Organizing
with Annalisa Cananzi (E.A.S.T. – Essential Autonomous Struggles Transnational), Cora Mohr (FrauenLesbenGruppe Frankfurt a.M.), Lee Stevens (collective member of Raumerweiterungshalle, artist and care worker, Berlin) and Suna Qu (political education, Berlin), moderated by Amina Été and Cornelia Herfurtner.
What forms does emancipatory politics take today? In this event, participants will report from their political work. How are they organized? How do they shape their practices? What are the ideas and needs behind autonomous feminist organizing? How does the emancipation of women and inter*, trans*, non-binary and agender people currently look, and express itself? What has changed within emancipatory politics and practices over the past 35 years? This event is open to women, inter*, non-binary, trans*, and agender people interested in autonomous feminist organizing. We will share our different experiences. After the joint discussion, there will be drinks and snacks and the possibility to exchange ideas.

Thu, 11 May 19h at Art Laboratory Berlin: Artist Talk | With Adriana Knouf, In Extraterrestrial Space. All Bodies Are Trans Bodies

Art Laboratory Berlin welcomes you to the new series Permeable Bodies (May – November 2023), with artistic and feminist explorations of embodiment and identity in flux and an investigation of our interconnection and interaction with the environment around us. With reading groups, talks, workshops, and podcasts, we propose a net of narratives of permeability to encompass a poetic (post)natural history of being a woman throughout 2023. Adriana Knouf, PhD (NL/US) works as an artist, writer and xenologist, focusing on topics such as wet media, space art, and queer and trans futurities. She is the Founding Facilitator of the tranxxenolab, a nomadic artistic research laboratory promoting entanglements among trans and xeno. Adriana regularly presents her artistic research around the world and beyond. Her work has been recognized by an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica (2021), an Honorary Mention from the Science Fiction Research Association’s Innovative Research Award, and as a prize winner in The Lake’s Works for Radio #4 (2020).

Fri, 12 May 2023 19:00at SCOTTY duo show: Raum und Rhythmus (Rooms and Rhythm)
with Zora Janković and Zuzanna Skiba. Curated by Karen Linnenkohl

We are all constantly moving. In order to achieve something, we have to take action. Action is always associated with setting, placing, laying. A material is taken, used or deformed and changed until it meets the requirements of our understanding of order and has found its place, its space. With the order comes habits – you “live” in the created spaces and adjust to your habits. When habits and traditions become too constrictive, one tends to look for a way out, an escape. It is therefore important to plan for interruptions and openness; it is important to give rooms a good rhythm. Taking place in the artist-run-space SCOTTY, the exhibition shows the striking ways in which Berlin-based artists Zuzanna Skiba and Zora Janković have arranged their respective material into surprising and rhythmic spaces.

Sat May 13, 18h Speaking to Ancestors part 3. The Unloved Ones by Daniel Lie
Speaking to Ancestors explores how our global society responds to ancestor worship, shamanism, animism and myth. How does this transnational legacy influence our thinking about ecology and environment, body and technology, (augmented) realities and beliefs? The program cooperates with various Berlin locations that function as “memory space: places of worship, healing and devotion. The artists are invited to develop their works in a new, site-specific way. Curated by @paulinedout and @keumhwa_kim
With the expansive installation The Unloved Ones, Lie responds to the architecture and history of the Zwingli Church in Berlin, Friedrichshain. Founded in 1908, the church has undergone many transformations since the division and reunification of Berlin, from usage of temporary archives to youth clubs. Today, it functions as a social space where culture, neighbourhood and care is practiced, as well as a church where religious services and church festivities take place. These multifaceted connotations become reference points for the artistic reflection on political power structures and beliefs that can be found in sacred as well as profane spaces.

location: Zwingli Church, Rudolfstraße 14, 10245 Berlin
entrance: corner of Danneckerstraße/RudolfstraßeExhibition
duration: May 13→ June 10, 2023Tuesdays→Saturdays, from 12pm→7pm (except Thursdays)

On view until May 27th Yalda Afsah: Curro at Between Bridges Residency Space:
A series of cuts mark the uneasy climax of Yalda Afsah’s Curro, an exhibition culminating the inaugural Between Bridges residency. The show debuts the fifth installment in the Berlin-based artist’s series of films concerned with ritualised interaction between men and animals. She has dedicated her practice to these human-animal relationships since 2018. Conceived as an installation across two rooms, the film is split into parts which are displayed in a fence-like framing structure and viewable from a rounded bench both constructed for the space and reminiscent of the physical entrapment depicted in the film. The structure also resonates with the film’s title, a Galician term for fencing something in. While Curro’s snipping scenes could conjure a score of symbolic associations, it lands less as metaphor here than as the pinnacle of a brutal and domineering frenzy. A kind of literal power grab.

until Jun 10th at einBuch.haus: Jeong Hwa Min: ma-eum: Wandering Minds
For the first edition of the picture book ma-eum: Wandernde Gemüter in German, einBuch.haus invites the illustrator Jeong Hwa Min to a solo exhibition.
ma-eum is a series of paintings in which the artist collects and documents ma-eum* that exist within her but have been forgotten, hidden, or neglected. The process of numbering the ma-eum, taking note of their condition, and documenting their proper storage is similar to the process of collecting to create a personal herbarium. The Korean word 마음ma-eum means heart, mind, and spirits in English.

*ma-eum:
1. The character or personality of a person.
2. Feelings and thoughts that arise in or are triggered by another person or thing in a person.
3. A space or place where a person’s thoughts, feelings, memories, etc., originate or settle.

The exhibition title (French: circus tent) already characterizes the artistic idea Christian Hellmich and Matthias Moravek are playing around with: Their paintings and sculptures are all dealing with aspects of the imaginary and illusionary, be it mysterious or clown-esque. Let the magic happen!
